Church of San Lorenzo
The church, one of the oldest parish churches in the city, was built in the Romanesque period and has been enlarged and restored several times over the following centuries and mostly rebuilt after heavy bombing during World War II. Its current appearance is the result of thorough restoration in the early decades of the 20th century by the architect Cesare Bazzani. This led to the construction of two three-light windows on the façade and the restoration of the original plan of the old church, resulting in the current two-level floors.
The church has a beautiful gabled façade in sponge stone- the typical local porous limestone - enriched by a 15th century portal decorated with racemes. The interior is very simple and cozy, characterised by the two-level floors and by a beautiful 17th century painting depicting the martyrdom of San Biagio. On the altar on the right there is the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows that is carried in the procession on Good Friday.
