Lance of Light
It is a modern symbol of Terni and depicts the evolution of the art of foundry from the raw iron of the base to the tip which looks like gold.
In actual fact it is five blocks of stainless steel. The skill of the master foundrymen in Terni has meant that, by using various alloys, the stainless steel takes on different colours.
A total weight of ninety tons for a work of art thirty metres high; thirteen thousand hours of work to realise a project conceived by a sculptor like Arnaldo Pomodoro, whose works of art have been installed in cities like Melbourne, Los Angeles , New York, Rome and San Paolo, making them even more beautiful.
It is probably the only sculpture by Arnaldo Pomodoro, who wanted his work to be cast in bronze, to be built entirely of steel and today, it is the largest work of art in the world made of cast steel. In order to give it its particular colouring, which varies for each of the blocks, new casting procedures were experimented, using sand from African mountains and Australian beaches for the moulds. These operations made possible thanks to the special experience acquired at the steelworks in Terni by some technicians, led by the master Mario Finocchio.
The combination of a master of modern sculpture and the experience of Terni’s master forgers, foundrymen, alloy and metal experts and welders, contributed to realising a work of art that is testimony to both Terni's past and its projection towards the future and modernism. Its position, at the entrance to the city centre which coincides with Corso del Popolo, designed by two masters of contemporary architecture such as Mario Ridolfi and Wolfgang Frankl, also responds to this aim.
