Torre Maggiore Temples

On the summit of Torre Maggiore, at 1121 above sea level, in a highly suggestive scenario, are the remains of two sanctuaries, respectively from the 6th cent. B.C. and the 2nd. cent. B.C.

Torre Maggiore

They were among the main cult centres in the area of the Martani mountains. During excavations several small votive bronzes were found representing Mars, or simple stylised human or animal figures.

An almost circular pit remains of the primitive structure, into which a small ditch enters; both are dug out in the rock and are partly under the subsequent temple structure.
The current remains date back to the Republican Era (from the 3rd and 1st cent. B.C.), when the  sanctuary underwent consistent renovation and monumentalisation works, even though the pre-existing structures already were one of the most important cult centres in the area.

From the top of the ruins one can enjoy a 360 degree view, It is easy to see the entire Martani mountain chain and the view extends up to Todi and Perugia (on clearer days). Towards the south-east one can admire the peaks of the Valnerina valley and Terminillo and sometimes even the Gran Sasso.
